Synopsis
Would you give your heart away if you knew it could only end in goodbye?
It should have been a time of romance and excitement for Anne – but it’s 1941 and the war is raging. So instead, she spends her days repairing spitfire wings and reminding herself that the real sacrifice is going on far away from her Cornish village.
When the news breaks that America has entered the war, it brings cautious hope to Anne and her family. And as the Jeeps filled with GIs eventually roll in, it seems their little community is to play a pivotal role in the next stage of the fight.
But the Americans don’t just bring Hollywood glamour and optimism, they also bring something more tantalising – so when Anne meets handsome Joe Mallory, she has to remind herself of exactly why he’s there; that any relationship between them could only end in goodbye.
But is the inevitability of ‘goodbye’ powerful enough to stop what has already begun to blossom?
Victoria Cornwall
Victoria Cornwall grew up on a dairy farm in Cornwall. She can trace her Cornish roots as far back as the 18th century and it is this background and heritage which is the inspiration for her Cornish based novels.
Victoria is married, has two grown up children and a black Labrador, called Alfie. She likes to read and write historical fiction with a strong background story, but at its heart is the unmistakable emotion, even pain, of loving someone.
Following a fulfilling twenty-five year career as a nurse, a change in profession finally allowed her the time to write. She is a member of the Romantic Novelists’ Association and the Historical Novel Society.

Set in Cornwall in WW2, this brilliant new book by Victoria Cornwall is both heart-warming and emotional. There is lots of information here about the period, the characters, the place so the book really come alive. Victoria has the knack of creating spellbinding stories and this one was no exception. I really hope there is a sequel on the way.

When the news breaks that America has entered the war, it brings cautious hope to Anne and her family. And as the Jeeps filled with GIs eventually roll in, it seems their little community is to play a pivotal role in the next stage of the fight.
Anne is determined not to fall a GI, but then she meets the handsome Joe Mallory. As their relationship blossoms, the day of Joe’s departure for the D Day landings loom closer and closer. Will her Cornish Yank survive? Will their love survive?
A beautiful story set in the Cornish countryside that you cannot help but enjoy. A story that involves you in the issues of racism that existed in the US military and how the negro soldiers were treated by their own countrymen. The story delves into parts of WWII history that you do not hear a lot about.
You do just want to keep reading and wishing for Joe to survive the D Day landings and the push into France to beat the Germans. Will Anne & Joe’s love for each other survive and will they live happily ever after? I found myself not able to put the book down – highly recommend!
This wartime romance will intrigue you as you learn how British girls and American soldiers interacted. I loved how the author was so empathic with the natural falling in love, and the consequences when the couple are from such totally different cultures. Not only the obvious clashes are shown but all the very big and small points of contention. A very well written book which both made me think as well as enjoying the story.
This book shows the growing friendship between the American GI Joe and local Cornish lass Anne. Can it develop further when Joe is about to be deployed to fight in France? As Joe learns more about life in Cornwall during WW2, he also learns more about racism in his own country, which could change his life.
